Investment: Microinvest
Microinvest
Founded in 2003 by the Soros Foundation Moldova, Microinvest operates in one of the poorest countries and most underdeveloped financial systems in Europe. Its mission is to provide credit to rural and peri-urban micro and small enterprises in economically depressed regions. It currently serves more that 1,500 clients. In 2007, Microinvest attracted over €2 million in new equity capital from the Balkan Equity Fund. Microinvest reached break-even in 2006, one year sooner than projected.
Why we invested
At the time of our investment, Microinvest was one of only two institutions providing access to credit in the rural areas of Moldova. We funded Microinvest because its management team had a proven track record of setting up successful savings and credit associations.
