The East-West Management Institute (EWMI) was founded in 1988 by George Soros as a not-for-profit organization. EWMI promotes the rule of law, civil society and free market systems globally by providing training, technical expertise and grants to foster sustainable reforms in government, business and civil society.
Why we invested
EWMI promotes legal and economic reform in developing and transitional economies. EWMI is a former grantee of OSI that has developed into a sustainable organization implementing programs for USAID.

Chea Boorat
For most Cambodians who have land, it is their most valuable possession, and for many, it is their only one. Historically, uncertainty has surrounded land issues in Cambodia and is exacerbated by the lack of documentation, leaving citizens with little or no official proof of lawful possession of their land. As a result of EWMI’s pilot project, Chea Boorat, a resident and farmer of Doung Chrom Village, has taken several steps to document and protect his land ownership.
